Designing a financial information system for a wealth and retirement fund management startup
I've been approached by a group of individuals recently to help them devise a financial information and analysis system. Some information about the company: They're a group of economists and financial analysts, with strong backgrounds in information analysis, finance, economy and all matters money related. However they're not at all familiar with IT and the enterprise resource planning software, nor are they sure where to turn to. So they've asked me to act as liaison between them and a team I'm supposed to assemble and basically make it all happen for them. The catch is, they've said that while funds aren't scarce, they want to develop an inhouse consulting system and avoid licensing fees of thousands of dollars from big company names like SAP, Oracle, and IBM. So, I'm supposed to gather a team of developers and have our own in-house ERP system designed. Some information about the project: The system must be capable of pulling information from public sources such as stock exchanges, commodity and trading markets, forex markets, store it in a database and mine useful data from it in the form of trends, future valuations, highlight sudden changes such as spikes or shocks or any alarming overall trends drawn from a multitude of factors that may indicate looming problem areas. The system must also have a secure user database with which the company can manage its customers and their profiles. I'm familiar and caught up on business intelligence basics, as well as ERP systems, but not with designing and developing an ERP and data warehousing/mining system. What I need to do is start learning, reading, which news, articles, magazines, and what knowledge do I require, and where do I start looking for resources to do all that. EDIT: I'm accidentally giving the impression I need to code a ERP system from scratch. That's not what I mean by developing an inhouse ERP solution. I don't want to develop a system from scratch. What I want is basically to know what ERP to use and why it'll be best, what sort of modules to deploy in it, what sort of modules I may need, and if we need to create or customize a module for our own, how to go about it. The system must also be able to pull and poll information from publicly available sources. It can then feed this into a database which is synced with the ERP system, or be integrated directly into the ERP. EDIT#2: A data warehouse with a business intelligence and analysis tool operating on it which integrates at least on a basic level with the ERP system (for example, to display a warning on a client profile when a substantial portion of his portfolio is in danger or in the homepage and news section when a stock is crashing). EDIT#3: Price is the primary limiting factor here.
